About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

London to Beijing to Hainan

We're travelling from London to Hainan stopping in Beijing for a few hours to change flight. On the way back we will be staying overnight in Beijing due to our flight time. Will the 72 hour free Visa apply and do we need a separate Visa to enter Hainan?

There is no such thing as a "72 hour free visa". If you are flying UK-China-UK then you need a tourist (L) visa because you are not in transit to a third country.
