If Shanghai is your only stop* within mainland China and your layover is less than 24 hours, you are definitely qualified for 24 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. You will apply, of course, for 24 hours free entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai to be allowed to exit the airport. You will present your onward ticket for US and accommodation booking in case that your layover is during the night hours. In case that your layover is long one and especially during the night hours your chances to be granted entry permit are good, but you should always keep in mind that the issuing of entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration authorities!
*You are allowed more than one transit stop within mainland China, but the the entire transit through Chinese territory has to be less than 24 hours.
