Renewing residence permit

There’s been some miscommunication between me and the school I’m studying at, and now I’m in a sticky situation.

I applied for a degree program, and was told that even though I’d be getting my degree from my current university, I have to go to another city to take a year of Chinese language courses first. I was also told that I’d probably just get another residence permit once I got to the other city.

I was planning to fly home to the US to visit my family during the summer holiday, and once I return, my residence permit will be expired. Now, the school says I should renew the permit before I go home, but it expires on the 20th of this month!

Is it still possible to renew a residence permit less than 30 days before it expires?

I also advise you to renew the residence permit before leaving because it saves you the troubles of applying for a new student visa. Please go to the Exit and Entry Administration as soon as possible to do the renewal. The time might be enough.

I was told by the people in charge of handling visa and residence permit paperwork, that since I have a multiple entry student visa, that I can just apply for another one in the city I’m going to within 30 days of me arriving in China again.

Thank you for your answer as well!
