Lost old chinese passport

I have lost my old Chinese passport since my immigration to America 40 years ago and have since become a US citizen. Recently I want to visit China but I am being told by various travel agencies that it won't be possible to get a visa without the copy of the Chinese passport. Would it be sufficient to apply for the visa if I can get my US immigration file and had all of my other US identification?
