About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

visit from Hong Kong to Shenzhen or Guangzhou

Hi, we are US citizens and will be tourists in Hong Kong for a week. while there, we would like to buy train tickets to go to Shenzhen and Guangzhou just for one day, returning to Hong Kong to sleep. Do we need to get a visa for China, or does that count as "transit" for under 72 hours?

thank you!

Hi, what if we skip Guangzhou? Are we allowed to take the train to Shenzhen from Hong Kong to visit without needing to get a visa?

If we get a visa, then would we be allowed to take the train to Shenzhen and/or Guangzhou?

(My parents already have a 10-year visa. They are allowed to take the train into China from Hong Kong for a day trip if they like, right?)

thanks!

To use the 144h twov, you must fly into Guangdong Province.
There are no flights from HK to Shenzhen but to Guangzhou.

Your parents are allowed to take the train or whatever they want as they have a chinese visa.

You either can apply for a China visa in advance or get a 5 day VOA at the border (but this visa is just eligible for Shenzhen).

Unfortunately, something like this is impossible. Of course, you have one a bit more complex option by using 144 hours visa free transit, but to use is you would be required to:

- take a flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou
- explore the city and maybe the surrounding area
- take a train to Shenzhen
- take a ferry from Shenzhen to Macau
- take a bus or ferry from Macau back to Hong Kong

To be eligible for such a trip, you are required to stay in mainland China for at least 25 hours.
