About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Is transit visa okay if flying in and taking cruise ship out.

Hi, I have an Australian Passport, I'm currently living in Japan.
I want to do a cruise that departs and arrives back in Shanghai. If I fly in to Shanghai then leave Shanghai on a cruise ship to the Philippines for a week and come back to Shanghai. I would fly in and out of Shanghai on the same day the boat departs and arrives back.
Would a transit visa be sufficient for this? At most the time between flights and ship docking / departing would be 10 hours.

Thank you so much in advance.

In case that your itinerary is:

Japan - Shanghai - Philippines
Philippines - Shanghai - Japan

You are definitely covered by 24 hours visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. Anyway, to be eligible for that, just a few requirements that have to be fulfilled:

- Your flights between Japan and Shanghai and vice versa have to be nonstop, i.e. without any additional landing within mainland China
- Your cruise should not have as the first port call, immediately after Shanghai, a port in mainland China
- Your cruise should not have as the last port call, immediately before Shanghai, a port in mainland China

So, if the above requirements are met, you will travel in Shanghai visa free, using 24 hours visa free transit twice.
