About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Come to Beijing by plane and leave Beijing by train

Does the 72/144 hour transit exemption apply for us: UK passport holders, we fly from Japan into Beijing. We stay 1 night in Beijing. We leave Beijing by train the following day to travel to Mongolia, the journey involves one night on the train. We have a visa for Mongolia. Thank you!

You need a visa to take the train from Beijing. The only train station allowed for transit without Visa is Beijing West which is the overnight train to Hong Kong.

Thanks for that. If we fly rather than take the train (to Mongolia) then I guess we qualify.

Yes, in that case you can enjoy 24/144 hours visa free transit in Beijing. If the transit time is longer than 24 hours, you will enjoy 144 hours visa free transit.
