Hiking instead of going up by Cable Car at Mutianyu Great Wall

Hi:

Has anyone ever hiked up to the wall instead of taking the cable car? How far is it? I want to hike up and slide down. A travel agent who is selling us on the cable car tickets said it takes about 4-5 hours to go up. That cant be right.
