Janet, your itinerary is eligible for 24 hours visa free transit twice, but you should take care of the following conditions:
- Your flight from US to SH should not have any additional landing within mainland China and also in the country where your cruise will have its first port call immediately after SH.
- Your flight from SH to US should not have any additional landing within mainland China and also in the country where your cruise will have its last port call immediately before SH.
Your Australian friends will have to fulfill literally identical conditions. You should just replace US with Australia in the above two conditions.
By the way, you will be traveling through SH covered by 24 hours visa free transit and not 144 hours visa free transit because you will stay there for less than 24 hours. In case that you probably didn't count your hours of transit in SH in proper way, you will be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit. You should just check about this detail to be certain about it.
In reality, you will tell at the check-in in US that you will travel through SH using 24 hours visa free and the same thing upon your arrival in SH. Of course, you will support your intention with relevant documentation. You will then fill the form and you will get a small sticker in the passport called free entry permit (temporary entry permit) that will allow you to stay in the city and also to make a transfer to your boat. The same thing for your way back. Australians will do the same thing, but maybe they will want to stay in SH a couple of days longer. In that case they will apply for 144 hours visa free transit. In reality, not so complicated.
