About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

connecting flight question

I am flying as follows:
Flight 1: Taipei to Shanghai with a connecting flight (1 hour layover) in Hong Kong.
Flight 2: 72 hours later, Shanghai to Hong Kong
Flight 3: 1 day later, Hong Kong to Taipei
Does this count as Taipei -- Shanghai -- Hong Kong which would qualify for 72 hour transit? Or does the connecting airport count (in this case Hong Kong)?

Unfortunately, the connecting airport, in your case Hong Kong, counts. In other words, your itinerary is considered to be a visit to China and not a transit. As a consequence, you will not be able to enjoy any kind of visa free transit in Shanghai. In case that the tickets are already bought and are non refundable, you will have to obtain a Chinese visa, but if this was just in planning phase, you should definitely change your flights to fit the relevant visa free transit rules.
