Urumqi has special rule which is limited to 2 hours transit so you will need a visa for this trip

The only other option is to pick flights that do not go through China

Jenny, in case that you have already booked your tickets, you will have to apply for Chinese transit visa - double entry (G) because a visa free transit through Urumqi is allowed only in case when you have international to international flights and even then the transit time should be less than 2 hours. In your both cases, you will need a transit visa, so you should start with your application. Having a transit visa - double entry in your passport, will allow you to exit the airport if you want.

In case that you still didn't book your tickets, I would advise you to skip Urumqi if there is an option that could somewhat compete in price with your actual itinerary.
