Yes ...we are arriving from us to Shanghai by plane on Friday n then plan to take a cruise from shanghai on Sunday to Japan Taiwan Philippines n ending the cruise in Hong Kong. We plan to then fly to Cambodia stay 2 days n fly back to the us. We want to take advantage of the 72 hr Visa free time in Shanghai but we weren't sure we were eligible due to taking a boat out of Shanghai rather than a plane. Please advise thanks mr burker

Do I understand properly that you will fly from US to Shanghai and then take a cruise that will depart from Shanghai on Sunday to Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong? I ask this question because I don't understand properly the reason for mentioning of cruise ship arrival on Saturday! OK, I will assume that you plan to travel the following itinerary: US - Shanghai - Japan - Taiwan - Hong Kong and can I assume that you will depart from Hong Kong to US or you will return to Shanghai? Look, the itinerary we are talking about is definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai, but your incoming flight to Shanghai should not have any additional landings in mainland China or Japan. To make the answer more precise, I would ask you to clarify the details regarding the mentioning of cruise ship arrival on Saturday and your flight out of the area.

Your itinerary is fine and the transfer from plane to boat is definitely allowed as long as you are in transit and according to your post, your transit looks exactly like this:

US - Shanghai - Japan

Here I have to mention just a couple of details that you have to take care of:

- Your fight from US to Shanghai should not have any additional landing(s) within mainland China and Japan
- Your first cruise port call immediately after Shanghai should not be in mainland China

In case that the above details are as they should be, you are perfectly eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. 144 hours has replaces 72 hours couple of years ago.
