About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

I am going to Guangzhou on a 144 hour visa-free transit

And then plan to fly to Hong Kong with a stop/layover in Shanghai before landing in Hong Kong. Is this illegal? Or is this ok as it is just a layover and I will be continuing on to Hong Kong then back to US? Thank you!

It is not okay and you must either get a visa or change your flights. The stop in Shanghai immediately limits you to 24 hours transit without visa in China.

Thank you for your reply. Would it be possible to take a train from GZ to Hong Kong and fly from Hong Kong to another country?

Assuming that you will arrive in GZ from a country different than mainland China or Hong Kong, the answer to your question is, yes, you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Guangdong province, but you have to proceed by train from East railway station to Hung Hom railway station in Hong Kong. This train is called GZ–Kowloon through train and you have to buy your ticket online in advance on Guangdong Line Schedule - MTR Intercity Through Train website. You will need this ticket in hard copy even before your check-in for your flight to GZ.

Of course. You can use train or ferry. If departing from GZ, by far the most convenient is train departing from GZ East railway station and arriving in Hung Hom railway station in Hong Kong. This is a GZ–Kowloon through train and you can buy your ticket on Guangdong Line Schedule - MTR Intercity Through Train website. Alternatively, you can buy your ticket for ferry from GZ or several other convenient places on CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website. When buying your ferry ticket from GZ ports, keep in mind that these are three eligible ports in or close to city: Port of GZ, Nansha Port and Lianhuashan Port.

You will print out your ticket or ticket confirmation, whatever is available since you perform an online booking. This will be enough because it will be visible that you have paid it and also the time of your departure from mainland China to the third country or territory.
