8 night China visit plus cruise to and from Shanghai

We fly to Hong Kong from the UK then on to Beijing for 8 day tour ending in Shanghai, which I'm aware I need the visa for. We then leave Shanghai the same day on a cruise for 8 days visiting Russia and Japan before returning to Shanghai before flying to Hong Kong then back UK on the same day as the cruise ends.
Do we qualify for visa free period in Shanghai before and after the cruise ?

Actually, here we talk about two different itineraries that has something to do with mainland China:

1. UK - Hong Kong - Beijing - Shanghai - departure for a cruise. After your landing in Beijing you will spend 8 days in mainland China. For this portions you will have to obtain pre-arranged Chinese visa. There is no single option for any kind of VOA or TWOV as you have mentioned by yourself. With a Chinese visa you will be perfectly covered until your departure from Shanghai and you really don't have to bother about any formal detail like an eligibility for some kind of visa free transit before your cruise in Shanghai because you are covered by your visa.

2. Cruise Russia - Japan - Shanghai - Hong Kong - UK. Here you have perfect itinerary to enjoy visa free transit in Shanghai for 24 or 144 hours depending on time that you will stay in wider Shanghai area.

By the way, you should not be worried too much for your second portion of the trip because you will already have your visa and UK citizens usually get 2 year multiple entry Chinese visas. Of course, you should request that your Chinese visa is long term multiple entry because this not an automatic process, i.e. if not requested, Chinese authorities could issue a visa with just a single or double entries.

Usual documents required are: your valid passport, your flight and cruise tickets and if possible your accommodation booking confirmation in hard copy. Nothing else.
