Thanks for the quick answer. How about the other way around? Can I take a train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and get a 24 hour entry if I have a ticket to a third country?

Actually, it appears that such an arrangement could be problematic because it is not allowed to use Guangzhou and Shenzhen airports in connection with 24 hours visa free transit for travels to Hong Kong and Macau. Anyway, you can use 144 hours visa free transit and take a direct train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. To be able to use 144 hours you will just have to postpone your departure by train to be at least 25 hours from your scheduled arrival by plane to Guangzhou. Please, you should keep in mind that to enjoy this option, you will have to arrive to Guangzhou directly from some other country and without any additional landing within mainland China until Guangzhou. Also, you will have to book your train ticket and have it in hard copy even before your entire journey to Guangzhou. The only train that is eligible for this option is Guangzhou–Kowloon through train running from Guangzhou East railway station to Hung Hom railway station in Hong Kong.

No, it is not possible to use the train from Hong Kong to Guangdong province and to enjoy any kind of visa free transit. Instead of the mentioned you can fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and after that travel to a third country and enjoy 144 hours visa free transit, but again, you have to postpone your departure from Guangzhou to the third country by minimum 25 hours. You can also return to Hong Kong, but via Macau to satisfy the rule of the third country. In order to travel to Macau from Guangzhou you will take a high speed train from Guangzhou to Futian Shenzhen station, take a metro from there to Shekou ferry port, cross to Macau and from Macau travel directly to Hong Kong. Keep in mind, you will need a ticket from Shenzhen Shekou ferry port to Macau even before you depart from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and you can book it through TurboJet ferry website.
