No, it is not possible to use the train from Hong Kong to Guangdong province and to enjoy any kind of visa free transit. Instead of the mentioned you can fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and after that travel to a third country and enjoy 144 hours visa free transit, but again, you have to postpone your departure from Guangzhou to the third country by minimum 25 hours. You can also return to Hong Kong, but via Macau to satisfy the rule of the third country. In order to travel to Macau from Guangzhou you will take a high speed train from Guangzhou to Futian Shenzhen station, take a metro from there to Shekou ferry port, cross to Macau and from Macau travel directly to Hong Kong. Keep in mind, you will need a ticket from Shenzhen Shekou ferry port to Macau even before you depart from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and you can book it through TurboJet ferry website.
