About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Two Different itineraries :1) LAS - KUL; PVG - SFO - YVR 2) KUL - PVG (One way)

I booked a round trip as seen above, Las Vegas to Kuala Lumpur and returning from Shanghai to Vancouver via SFO. I want to use the 72 /144 hour visa free transit by booking another separate one way flight from KUL or SIN or ULN to catch my return flight out of PVG. Would this be allowed for the visa free transit through Shanghai or should the one ward and connecting flights should be on the same itinerary!?. Thanks very much for your assistance!!

Thanks very much, Zupan. The onward is Vegas - Denver - Narita - KUL & return from PVG - SFO - YVR. KUL to PVR trip, I am buying a separate oneway ticket to catch the PVG - SFO/YVR flight. So I can give 4-5 days between my arrival in PVG to departure 🛫 date from PVG to SFO. To be more precise, my return flight out of PVG is scheduled on 25 Dec, Christmas 🤶 day, 13.30 hours out of PVG.

Thanks 🙏 Again!!

Basically, your entire itinerary is Las Vegas - Kuala Lumpur - Shanghai - San Francisco - Vancouver. Here I have one question and that is, what is your layover between Las Vegas and Kuala Lumpur since there are no direct flights between Las Vegas and Kuala Lumpur?

OK, regardless of your answer, everything that matters is your following itinerary: Kuala Lumpur - Shanghai - San Francisco. In case that you don't have any additional landings/layovers between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai and Shanghai and San Francisco, you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai.

You should not bother yourself with the questions about your tickets. They can really be of any kind, separate, different airlines, round trip, single trip... There are no policy within the rules for 144 hours visa free transit that will disqualify you because of any particular ticket type. It is important that you have them in hard copy and also your accommodation booking.

Yes, this is definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit in Shanghai. Having in mind that you depart from Shanghai on December 25 at 13:30, you are allowed to arrive in Shanghai from Kuala Lumpur on December 19. The reason is simple... The number of the allowed days (6 in maximum) starts officially counting from 00:01 of the next day from your arrival, i.e. from December 20. Just bring your tickets and accommodation booking in hard copy.
