Yes in principle, but I would really discourage you from doing that for two reasons:

- It appears that Chinese authorities are trying to curb Hainan VOA in favor of Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access. I know that here you have to deal with the agency, but it will be enough to just book an airport transfer from them
- Hainan VOA costs 469 (or so) CNY for UK passport holders, so I honesty assume that an airport transfer would be less than that

So, just take Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access and travel with complete peace of mind.

Yes, you are allowed to do that in principle. Anyway, it appears that Chinese authorities are trying to downplay the use of Hainan VOA by encouraging the use of Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access. If I were you I would use the latter option. Of course, within that option you have to make an initial arrangements with local travel agency and book from them a simple product, usually a transfer from the airport to your hotel, but when you take into account that Hainan VOA cost for UK citizens is 469 or so CNY then the payment for the mentioned transfer is not such a big deal. Now it's up to you to decide, but I will repeat once again that I really suggest you to take Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access.

Yes in principle, but I would honestly discourage you from that option. The reason is in the fact that Chinese authorities are strongly pushing for 30-day free visa access. So, I would suggest you to go after the latter one. The procedure is quite easy. You should just make a rough itinerary of how many days and where you will stay in Hainan. With this and with your flight plan you will contact local travel agency and also agree with them about the purchase of one of their simple offers, for example airport to hotel transfer. They will offer their support at relevant authorities and you will receive a confirmation that you can travel visa free to Hainan.

I will answer to you with the same text to some other poster because the situation is practically identical with just one addition and that is that UK citizens are required to pay 469 CNY for Hainan VOA. So, the answer that was already posted:
