About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Visa Requirement for China

We are US citizens going on a 14 day cruise starting from Shanghai, Japan, Taipei, Manila and ends in Hongkong before return to USA. My question is do we need a visa for China since we are flying from California to Shanghai but will change planes in Beijing with 3 hours of layover. We also plan to make a day trip by ferry to Macau from Hongkong prior to return to California. Thanks.

You need a visa because you will travel throug two different transit zones, i.e. Beijing and Shanghai. Unfortunately, the mentioned 3 hours of layover in Beijing are enough to make you ineligible for 144 hours visa free transit. Of course, if the time from your scheduled landing in Beijing until your scheduled departure for cruise from Shanghai is less than 24 hours, then you would be eligible for 24 hours visa free transit. Anyway, I highly doubt that this is the case, since usual stay for this type of arrangements is more than 24 hours just in Shanghai. So, you will have to obtain Chinese visa and after that everything will be fine.
