You are recommended to take a train. There are 4 trains from Yancheng to Funing at 10:00, 13:15, 18:13, 21:33. It take about 50 minutes to get and it is also the fastest way to Funing.

So coming from NJ, I have to switch trains at Yancheng for a different train to Funing, or can I go direct from NJ to Funing?

There is no direct train to Funing and you need to transfer in Yancheng.
