About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

USA visitor to Shanghai for 4 days has short flight layover (2 hours) in. Beijing on return flight.

We are from the USA and will depart from Korea on cruise ship arriving. We will stay 4 days in SH and then fly back to Los Angeles. Our flight goes SH to Beijing (for a 2-3 hour layover) and then to Los Angeles. Will we need a visa? If so what kind.

Unfortunately, the segment SH - Beijing made you ineligible for both 24 and 144 hours visa free transit in China and you will have to apply for a Chinese visa. I suggest that you apply for tourist (L) visa because US citizens are eligible for 10 years Chinese visa.
