About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flying from Laos to Guangzhou China.

I’m trying to book a flight and wanted to see if this route qualifies. A US citizen flying from VTE,Laos to Guangzhou, China. Use 72 hour visa free. Then Guangzhou to JFK, USA but have a layover in either Chengdu or Beijing. Do I qualify for the visa free since my destination is US but the layover is within China? Does the layover count towards a domestic flight and will not qualify for 72 hour visa free?

If you have a layover in Chengdu or Beijing, you will not qualify for it. Remember that you can only choose one of the 144h visa-free transit zone, ie: Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei as a whole; Chengdu City; Guangdong Province; Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang as a whole...so just redo your itinerary.
