Do they check that your arrival/departure country are actually different for this visa?
For example, arriving from Japan and then heading back to Japan?

It's not a visa. I think the rules are quite clear, and you can't fly Japan-China-Japan without a visa. You wouldn't even be allowed to board your flight in Japan.

Yes and the airline also verifies when you check in as well and will deny you boarding.
