About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We are staying in Hong Kong and want to take the train into China for shopping/sightseeing.

If we return the same day what do we need? We are travelling on Australian passports and will be going on to Europe.

The only really simple option is to aplly for 5 day Shenzhen VOA (visa on arrival) upon your arrival at the border crossing between Hong Kong and mainland China. You cannot use cross-border train, but you can use local train to reach border crossing and there you will apply for Shenzhen VOA. After that you can continue by metro. Of course, you can use cross-border bus to Shenzhen and also a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen. This VOA limits you to Shenzhen area. By the way, it is highly advisable that you do not tell to the immigration official that you plan just a day trip, but two day one. Also, it is advisable to have an accommodation booking for one night and the confirmation in hard copy... Just something very cheap from Booking.com... Just to secure your VOA. In reality, it should be just fine even without it, but just for any case...
