About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I hold a British passport travelling from UK to Beijing for a 2 night stay

then leaving on a cruise ship in Oct will I be able to use the 72 hour visa please?

Yes in principle. Anyway, you didn't supply us with some other crucial information. Your flight from UK to Beijing is fine unless it has some additional landing(s) in mainland China, beside Beijing, of course. Also, it is perfectly fine to leave wider Beijing area (I assume from Tianjin) by cruise, but remember that your first port call has to be outside of mainland China. In other words, it is just fine in case that your cruise has the first port call in South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong or some other third country. If your itinerary is harmonized with the mentioned, you are definitely eligible for 144 hours visa free transit.
