Can I work as a teacher on a short term work visa?

I will be travelling to China to teach English and my employer suggested that I travel on a short term work visa then convert to a Z type in China. I have never heard of a short term work visa. Will it be legal for me to work on it?

Yes, there exists a short term working visa, but it also falls into the category of Z visa. So if you plan to work for a long term, why not apply for a Z directly?
