About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

5-Night Shanghai cruise + 2-3 days before or after?

Hi, we're US citizens (with US passports) living in New Zealand as permanent residents. We've booked a cruise that departs Shanghai (to Japan) and arrives back in Shanghai 5 days later. We'd like to have 2-3 days before or after the cruise to explore Shanghai. What type of visa do we need? Does it matter if we do the land days before or after the cruise? Thank you!

Oh, that's very interesting -- I hadn't thought of applying the visa rules more than once. Thanks very much!

Actually, you are perfectly allowed to enjoy 144 hours visa free transits in Shanghai twice, i.e. before and after your cruise.

Now, the most important detail:

Your first route has to look like this:

New Zealand or any other country (but not Japan) - Shanghai - Japan

Your second route:

Japan - Shanghai - New Zealand or any other country (but not Japan)

Like this, you will be perfectly eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai and you do not need any kind of visa. Just bring your documents in hard copy: Flight tickets, cruise ticket and hotel booking for Shanghai.

Actually, there are no actual limits how many times you can use visa free transit. Basically, as much times as you are eligible. Now, you should just review your itinerary and see whether you fit in the above mentioned frame for visa free transit. I hope you do.
