So embarking in Singapore should be straight forward then obtain visa when in Shanghai?

Of course it does. Anyway, this is not a visa, so I encourage you to use exact terminology, i.e. 144 hours visa free transit to avoid any possible misunderstandings. Your itinerary Hong Kong - Shanghai - UK is perfectly qualified for this convenience, so keep in mind to bring with you your flight ticket and your hotel booking in hard copy, ready to be shown to relevant border authorities.

Of course that you cannot. Vast majority, if not all customer services are incompetent and reluctant to assure you about something when they have far easier solution, i.e. to make you obtain a visa.

So, if your port call immediately before Shanghai is Hong Kong and if you are flying from Shanghai by nonstop flight from China to UK, you are perfectly covered by 144 hours visa free transit. This is not a gamble but official Chinese policy that can be found in Timatic.

You are NOT getting a visa. As mentioned above by Zupan, it is important to use the correct terminology to avoid confusion when you are checking in. You must say "Transit Without Visa" at all times, and never say "visa", "transit visa" or "visa on arrival" which all exist but are not relevant to you.
