About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Short tourist stay

Australian passport holder. Traveling to Hong Kong from Australia. From Hong Kong I am flying to Shanghai and will be staying only for 1 night. Arriving at 12:10 and leaving the next day at 17:45. Returning back to Australia from Shanghai via transit through Hong Kong. I have a hotel reservation in Shanghai for the night. Although this is not strictly speaking transit am I eligible for a 24 hour or a 72 hour visa?

This is a trip to China, you need a visa. Transit means yo are going directly to the third country and not directly returning to the country you entered China from.
