Going to China for a semester exchange program, can I use my 10 year M Chinese visa?

I'm planning to go to China for 5 months for a university exchange program (so I will be a student). I already have a 10 year M Chinese visa and I want to be able to return home each month to visit my wife. Can I use my 10 year M visa? Or am I required to get a student visa?

If the school is ok with this, I think you can use the 10 year visa and I quite understand that giving up the 10 year visa is great loss.

You need a X2 visa. Studying with anything else is illegal.
