OK, your itinerary is: Singapore - Shanghai - Japan - China - somewhere else.

Look, in principle, the answer is yes, you are eligible for 144 hours visa free transit twice or 24 hours visa free transit in your second case, but you should have in mind that between Singapore and Shanghai you should not have any port calls in mainland China (Hong Kong is fine). Also, you should have in mind that the first port after you leave Shanghai has to be Japanese one and not a mainland Chinese! In the end, you have mentioned that you will return to China. Keep in mind, being it Shanghai or Tianjin that you can visit just one Chinese port after you leave your last Japanese port, i.e. you cannot visit both Tianjin (Beijing) and Shanghai consecutively, but just one of them. One more detail, after you depart from China by plane, you next destination cannot be Japan. In case that your itinerary is accordance with the mentioned you can travel visa free.
