About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I'm landing in HK mid May 2019 and wish to make a two day stop in Shanghai on a British passport.

can I travel visa free with details of return flight confirmed? Or is the transit visa only applicable to visitors transiting only through the transport hub?

You must be in transit to a third country. For example, Hong Kong-Shanghai-Japan is ok without a visa. But Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong requires a visa.

Of course, you can be a clever traveler by using the option of flight combinations like Hong Kong - Shanghai and Shanghai to Macau. This option is perfectly fine and you will be eligible for 144 hours visa free transit.
