About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Qingdao

if im flying from Australia to Hong Kong then into Qingdao, is that fine for the 144 hr visit?

There is no 144 hour visa. There is a 144 hour transit without visa but you must be in transit to a third country. You will need to fly without stop from Qingdao to a country other than HK.
