About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hours in Shanghai, US passport

If I have a american passport can I fly to Shanghai from Thailand and stay 72 hours and then fly back to Thailand?

Of course you can when you have a visa for China.
TWOV is not possible as you're not in transit.
