About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

am i Eligible?

Fly Australia to Shanghai May 23 , one night in Shanghai, join a cruise ship that goes to Japan May 24, re enter China May 31 and fly out from Shanghai that day

This is fine, but you should keep in mind that it is not allowed for a cruise ship to have two port calls within mainland China consecutively. If this is not the case and if the next port call after you leave Shanghai is not within mainland China and also if you do not have any port call in mainland China just before your arrival in Shanghai, you are perfectly fine.
