About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I apply for transit visas for all?

Hi,
I am planning to travel from Tokyo arriving in Shanghai Jan 12 then fly to Hong Kong Jan 16, to Beijing on Jan 18 then back to USA on Jan 23/24.

I’m wondering if I can apply for visa free entries for these Visits? I feel like I’ve read 144hr is available for shanghai now as well since I’d be there longer than 72 hrs.
Also just to clarify when does your “72 hrs” start? I assumed the time you enter the country but some other locations go by midnight or the next day you arrive.

I’d appreciate any advice!

If you have more than one stop in Mainland China and staying in the country for more than 24 hours, then you need a visa. You can either abandon your plan to visit Shanghai and only visit Beijing instead, or change your outbound flight so it will be nonstop Shanghai to the US. Both regions now have 144-hour transit and the 72-hour transit is no more.

You are correct in the routes, and thank you for replying.
This has been my main confusion if I could do two 144hr visas while all in the same trip but it sounds like it will be ok :) thank you so much again for the reply!

@John Doe, but it appears that the above travel route is just fine for two 144 hours free transits.

The first leg: Tokyo - Shanghai - Hong Kong
The second leg: Hong Kong - Beijing - US

Or am I missing something?

As far as 72 or 144 hours are concerned, both Beijing and Shanghai have 144 hours visa free policies and they start at 00:00 or better to say at 00:01 (a minute after midnight) regardless of your arrival in both Beijing and Shanghai.

Actually another question, I am actually traveling USA to Tokyo then the above itinerary posted.
But seeing detail on flights in and out of mainland China needing to be direct I am wondering about my other flights.

My plan has been to purchase a multi city flight from USA to Tokyo then Beijing to USA and buying one way flights for the other destinations. Would this multi city ticket be an issue and do I need to make sure that my flight from Beijing to USA does not have a layover elsewhere in mainland China?

There are no problems regarding multi city, return or one way flights as long as you depart from one country to China and depart from China to a different country than the previous one. So, your itinerary is just fine, but you really have to take care that your flight from Beijing to US does not have a layover elsewhere in mainland China. It can have a layover in some other country, but not in Hong Kong because you will arrive from Hong Kong to Beijing and then such a circumstance would be considered as a non transit.
