About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

will I be denied entry to China?

Hi, I have US passport but no visa.
I plan to go from LAX to Osaka, Osaka to Tokyo, tokyo to Shanghai, Shanghai to Osaka, Osaka to LAX. Will I be denied the 72 hrs visa??

No, because you will be denied boarding and you will never reach China. You must either get a visa or change your flights.

how come I do not qualify for the 72 hours visa with this flight path?

Because 72 hours visa does not exist. There is only 24/72/144 hours transit without visa, but Japan-Shanghai-Japan is not a transit, it's a visit to China, and therefore you need a visa.
