china visa requirement for tourist

i have a group (52) of USA & Canadian citizens with passports flying from the USA to Beijing, china for 3 days and then flying from Beijing to shanghai to board a cruise ship for 14 days ending in hong kong and flying back to he USA. do we need a visa or can we use the 144 hour rule not requiring a visa?

Hi, you do need to apply for a visa in advance as the 144-hour free visa transit can only be used in either Beijing or Shanghai.
