Not so fast. Eligibility in Xiamen depends on the passport you hold.

You don't need any kind of visa. You are perfectly within the rules for 24 hours visa free travel.

Legally it's fine, although there have been intermittent reports of refused boarding if you are traveling on Xiamen Airlines when departing from the US. Try calling the airline or Google around to see if there are some recent examples.

Those are not rumors. Google the infamous Qantas incident in which a UK couple were refused boarding at Christchurch airport because the ground agent did not understand the rules. Airline employees mishandle passengers every day and there's little course of action.

There were some rumors spread by people who simply did not prepare themselves before traveling through Xiamen. They just bough their tickets and totally misunderstood the rules of 24, 72 and 144 hours TWOV. Some of them bough their return tickets from US or some other places to Xiamen, or they have though that it is fine to have two stopovers within mainland China. Of course, although unfortunately and I feel sorry for them, they were denied boarding. In the case Zsa, everything is clear. Beside the mentioned there are really so many good examples online with 24 hours TWOV in Xiamen. The rule is to have all your necessary documnetation in printed form and to repeat all the time that you travel visa free.

OK, as I can see, Qantas has apologized for not knowing the UK couple had every right to travel to China visa free. Also, this has nothing to do with Xiamen transit or Chinese travel rules. Never mind... It was a year ago, certain members of airport staff were not well informed then and since that day, the situation is improved and circumstances like this one are rare or practically non-existent.
