About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Ho Chi Minh City to Guangzhou to Tokyo?

Hi there,
I hold a US passport and have the following itinerary planned for my vacation this summer:

1) Los Angeles, USA --> Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
2) Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam --> Guangzhou (max 2 days, stay with friend) --> Tokyo, Japan
3) Tokyo, Japan --> New York City, USA

Will #2 qualify for the 72h free transit? Any guidance would help.

This is definitely within the legal frames for 72 hours free travel. Just keep in mind that your flights between Ho Chi Minh and Guanzhou and Guangzhou to Tokyo are nonstop, i.e. without any landing or layover in some other city within mainland China beside Guangzhou, of course.
