About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Valid Route? Am I eligible for a visa waiver or should I apply for a full visa?

Hi, planning a trip to Beijing at the end of May. My route will be Hong Kong -> Beijing -> Hong Kong.

Your alternative to the route Hong Kong - Beijing - Hong Kong could be Hong Kong - Beijing - Macau. Macau is very close to Hong Kong and in this case, you would be definitely within the legal frames for 144 hours free travel.
