What is the longest tourist visa you can get?

We are an Australian couple looking to spend a few months enjoying China as tourists. We are semi retired and would love to spend as long as we can in China and be based in Shanghai. What is the longest period we can stay? Is there a program which allows us to potentially stay for a few years and make Shanghai our home?
