It depends on whether you have a close living relative who is a Chinese citizen with an ID card. If you do you may qualify for a Q1 visa which can be converted into a residence permit (however keep in mind that it's not guaranteed as local police may still refuse your application after you have entered China). If not then the only way is a L visa and exiting China every 60 days.

Hi John Doe,
Thank you so much for your reply. I don't have a close relative in China. All my relatives are extended family members. :(
Thank you so much for your help.

Fret not. You may be still eligible for a Q2 visa by having other family members in China (as long as they have a valid ID card) and the duration of stay is usually between 120 days to 180 days, which should be enough for occasional visits.
