About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does the outbound flight need to be in the same itinerary?

I have a short noticed meeting in Beijing 2 weeks from now, so I might need to purposely use visa-free transit.
I am planning to go from US--->Beijing, and after 3 days come back from Beijing--->Canada--->US. It will be 2 different bookings so I want to know if this is legit?

Arrive at the airport early when you start the trip because you will likely have check in agents won't believe it's allowed even though it is.
