About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, I'm traveling USA to Thailand and stopping in Shangai for 8 hours. Does the 72 hour visa appply?

I will be landing in Shangai on April 12, but my passport expires in July. Will that be a problem?

It doesn't because a) it is not a visa and b) you are only stopping for 8 hours and only those stopping for more than 24 hours can get it. Also your passport needs to be valid for more than 3 months when transiting through Chinese airports and in this case it is unclear whether yours will expire in 3 months.

So, would I be able to go out of the airport and visit Shangai for a couple of hours or no?

8 hours is not long enough for immigration to let you out, and even if it's long enough, Shanghai immigration requires a hotel reservation which you don't have. Also you will be refused boarding if your passport's remaining validity is less than 3 months.

Oh man!! That sucks. Thanks for the info thoigh. One last question.
What are my options? What can I do? I really dont want to be inside the airport for 8 hours. Is there anything I can do to tour Shangai for a couple of hours? Thanks in advance.

Your only realistic options are to get a visa or change your flights. Not very helpful, I know.
