About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I'm hoping you can let me know if I qualify for visa-free transit or if I should apply for a visa.

Hello,
Does the country of *original* departure have to be different than the final country in order to qualify for 144-hour free transit? I am a Canadian citizen (and passport holder) travelling from Canada to Japan.

Canada to Japan
Japan to South Korea
South Korea to Japan
Japan to Beijing (direct flight to Beijing Capital Airport, with intention to stay under 144 hours)
Beijing to Canada (departure from Beijing Capital Airport, one layover IN Canada on the way to the final destination within Canada)

Thanks,

Immediately before and after Beijing is what matters.

The Japan > Beijing > Canada works fine assuming it not yet another landing in Japan between Beijing and Canada even if just a quick transit.
