About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Meeting at Shanghai Airport

I have a USA passport. I want to fly from Tokyo to Shanghai for a meeting at the airport with a business colleague from China. I would return to Tokyo that afternoon. Would this classify as "visa-free transit" being that I'm only in Shanghai for about 7 hours? I can't tell by the rules if I'm required to stay in an "airport transit area" vs being allowed to actually go to a restaurant or lounge for the meeting in the departure area before boarding my return flight.

Tokyo to Shanghai to Tokyo is not a transit, so you won't qualify for free transit in there. You are supposed to apply for a visit visa for this trip.
