Checked baggage on 72 hour transit visa

I am planning to travel from Sydney to Mumbai with a stopover in Beijing. The layover is 14 hours and we want to visit the great wall and forbidden city.
My Question - when we land at Beijing, do we need to get our checked baggage out with us? I felt we don't need to because we still will boarding our scheduled flight to the final destination. Travelling around with the checked baggage is going to be very tough.

Maybe it's possible to check through, maybe not.
You didn't tell us if you fly on 1 ticket or seperate ones, same airline all the way or different ones?

The bags will normally be checked to your final destination but the check-in agent can also tag them to Beijing at your request. It's not something you should worry about at this point if you are traveling on the same airline.
