trip to 3rd party country on the way TO China - am I eligible 144 hour Shanghai visa?

I am an Australian travelling from Australia to Japan - Japan to Shanghai - Shanghai to Australia.

Are those the only flights, no other landings?
Australia > Japan > Shanghai > Australia is allowed
Australia > Japan > Shanghai > Japan > Australia would not be allowed for example since entry and exit country are the same (even if you don't leave the plane or airport)
