About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I travel from Thailand to Shanghai with a USA passport for the 144 hour free transit?

I am flying from USA to Thailand and then flying from Thailand to Shanghai for a 5 day stay. Can the 144 hour free transit apply if my point A is Thailand, point B is Shanghai, and then final destination point C is USA?
