About:China Flight

Are a lighter and pocket knife permitted in luggage to China?

My son flew from US to China. His baggage is being detained in China because he packed one (1) lighter and a regular size Swiss Army knife. Are these two items not permissible in China?

Generally, it is not allowed to take a lighter but taking a regular size knife in checked luggage is available.
